Umrah is a sacred pilgrimage in Islam, often referred to as the “lesser pilgrimage” when compared to the Hajj. While Hajj is obligatory for every able-bodied Muslim who can afford it, Umrah holds great spiritual significance and can be undertaken at any time of the year. Pilgrims engage in a series of rituals, including Tawaf (circumambulation) around the Kaaba in Mecca, Sa’i (the ritual of walking between the hills of Safa and Marwah), and the symbolic shaving of the head or trimming of hair. Unlike Hajj, Umrah is not bound by specific dates, providing flexibility for individuals seeking a spiritual journey. Pilgrims often express a profound sense of purification and spiritual renewal upon completing the rituals of Umrah, fostering a deeper connection to their faith and the Islamic heritage. The experience emphasizes humility, unity, and devotion, drawing Muslims from around the world to participate in this sacred and voluntary act of worship.
Starting from one of the Miqat or when aligning with them on the plane, Ihram for Umrah or Hajj commences. For individuals who wish to take Ihram in order to perform Umrah or Hajj, the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, designated certain locations as Miqat.
Tawaf is the seven-circumambulation of the Kaaba. Beginning with the Black stone, which is located on the pilgrim’s left side. The pilgrim should use this time for supplication and prayer.
Sa’ee begins with Safa and finishes at Marwa, two small hills close to the Kaaba. Every direction is counted as one as Muslims move back and forth between them seven times. It is suggested that the performer supplicate, pray, or read the Quran during this time.
